James and Pamela Mason arrived in the U.S. in November, 1946, but he became embroiled in a legal battle with David E, Rose, who claimed the actor had agreed to form a production company with him. Mason left his entire estate to his second wife, Clarissa Kaye, but his will was challenged by his two children. The show business community in England was fairly small back then, and Mason started meeting all the right people, gravitating towards the film world. His father was a successful textile merchant, and young James grew up in a privileged milieu. (1958) and The Decks Ran Red (1958) then played a suave master spy hunting down Cary Grant with romantic assistance from Eva Marie Saint in North by Northwest (1959), directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
